PAYG abroad

Anonymous
Not applicable

Hello,

I have been given the following advice from a shop in the UK , and chat. (prior to going to Spain)

Q. I want to use data abroad on a PAYG

A. we will set your phone for abroad. (done) then text moretravel to 21300 (done)

Text received, your travel bolt on is now active. (done)

I have turned the phone off and on, and turned data on, and nothing changed.

No data. (Now in Spain)

What am I doing wrong.

Thought I might get a clearer answer from someone who has been through this.

Note I am PAYG

Previously had a £3 bolt on in the UK that worked fine.

Any help please? Mac

There should be nothing else you need to do as long as you have mobile data and data roaming toggled on. Have you tried selecting another Spanish network?

Which network are you connected to?
How much credit do you have on sim?

The only advice I can offer (in addition to the above) is relating to the network .When I was on PAYG the best network of them all was Movistar. Initially I was tempted with the networks common in the UK ie Vodafone and Orange but they were pretty useless with an O2 phone. Movistar always gave me good coverage. I am on contract now but still choose the same network when abroad in Spain

For whatever reason, about two hours after my post, and about four hours after I bought the data package, my phone seemed to offer a text message (but it was not a text), when I clicked on it, a roaming setting was presented (that was never there before) put this on, and away it went.

I was on a train at the time, and I think your suggestion of changing networks (which I had not seen, as I had no data, ha) kicked in by going through a tunnel or two.

Thanks for your (and others) replies that would have got me sorted had I been online.

Only miff was that I was charged £1.99 real cash, despite having a bonus £15 'free' allowance. Whats that about.

And one more while I am here, I had a random text this morning, before buying any data saying 'you've successfully added your wifi service to your O2 account'.

Where did that come from, I personally had added nothing in the last 10 days.

thanks all

Glad you are sorted to a certain extent slight_smile

The 'bonus' credit you have is as far as I'm aware only for use in the UK, as for the text...no idea Thoughful

Hi @Anonymous

You will incur a £1.99 roaming charge every day you use mobile data/internet whilst abroad. This has nothing to do with any free allowances. It is the cost of roaming abroad. If you dont want to incur this charge on a daily basis turn data roaming and mobile data off....and only use Wifi to use the internet. In Spain many places offer free wifi (I go every 5-8 weeks and use Wifi all the time...

Hello,

thanks for the rapid answers.

I also go to Spain often, and since having a 'smart' phone for the first time since Xmas, have been quite happy with wifi hotspots.

The temptation of a freebie allowance of £15 that said I could use it for "calls, texts or data", suckered me into thinking I could use it for calls texts or DATA.

A case of all that glitters is a bill.

Thanks for the heads up from all, I have turned data off, and shall just take my impression of O2 down two pegs.

Buenos noches

Have a great time.

If you go as often as me, we may bump into each other in April  (All supposing you are in the Malaga area of the Costa Del Sol that is) LOL
