I have turned my phone off and on 12 times )i.e. every 30 mins as directed) since I lost signal at around 10am today. I am still not connected on my new O2 contract after porting my number from Vodafone.

It can take up to 24 hours in extreme cases.
Keep rebooting or contact O2.

Seems you are doing the right thing. I assume your Vodafone SIM is now dead.
