Switch to 4G without excessive cost?

Anonymous

Hi all,

I'm just six months into a two year contract, anyone know if I could be switched to 4G without having to buy out the contract (I've been offered a discount).  Just want 4G speeds when I'm in London (which is quite frequently) and would like to just carry on paying a standard tariff

Take a look here and scroll down the page: http://www.o2.co.uk/4g/4g-tariffs

You'll still have to buy out your current contract, but it may not cost you as much. It doesn't look as if they're going to offer any 4G bolt-ons. At least not at the outset. One way or another, if you want 4G speeds, you're going to have to pay for it.

Hi,

You would need to choose one of 02's 4g tariffs to enjoy the higher speeds.

4G Sim cards are available at 02 Stores now.

To go the 'standard' route as you suggest would require me to buy myself out of my current contract.  I'm looking for solutions where they can just switch me to 4G with an increase in tariff if necessary

OP says they have "been offered a discount"

If its that much of a want for 4G, then i'm sure it would be taken up.

The problem I have with buying out my contract (even with the discount) is that I'd be paying in advance for about 18 months of unlimited calls & texts, plus 1GB / month of data, only to have to start paying for that again immediately on a new 4G contract

I have to ask why knowing that 4G was coming soon did you take out a 2 year contract with no escape clause built in?

This suggests you must have been happy with the deal you had at that time.

If you only need it for London then the improved service on 3G should be adequate.

At the time I took it out 4G wasn't 'coming soon' as no dates had been quoted at the time.  If 4G will bring improvements to 3G then I'll probably be happy, but in my experience 3G is less than ideal in most areas
