Nee contract old sim not payed off

I have an iPhone that I’ve smashed however I want to open up a new contract pay monthly.
if I did this whilst I still have an exceeding amount to pay of on my current phone but placed the sim into the new phone how would paying off work?
Is that do able / would it work? Or would it not because the sim would still be registered paying monthly with the old phone?

Your sim would work in a replacement phone and you would continue to pay off the smashed device as before until the contract finishes @Lily143
