hi there,

The issue is years ago when me and my ex partner were together he got me a contract phone that I paid for in his name as I was 17 and couldn't get my own contract phone, since this contract started I've paid for it and since and my ex split up I've continued to pay the contract and recently paid off the contract in full and upgraded and now my ex partner has decided to close the account with a balance of £849 left due to very recently upgrading and I'm left with a phone that's not been paid for with no number linked to it as he's cut the network to the sim card and I'm wondering if there's a way that I can open a contract in my name with this same phone or if anyone knows what the next steps are in terms of the phone as I'm worried about the repercussions that may come from my ex suddenly deciding that the contract is an issue. Thank you

It's a strange situation, but if the contract was in your exes name, I believe he's responsible for the balance that's still due on the phone, even though you've been paying all this time. If left unpaid, that would affect his credit rating and his ability to get another contract. At least that's how I see it.

I will tag an O2 account advisor who will be on in the morning at 8 am. She will hopefully send you a Private Message through this page. Look for the envelope icon top right of the page.

@O2Sarah- can you please advise @Anne11?

Thanks for the tag @Bambino.  Your are 100% right here if the account was taken in an ex partners name they would fully responsible for the bill. They would have been made aware of the amount needed to pay this off when disconnecting the contract. We do have options for sim only 30 day rolling contracts and pay as you go plans here https://www.o2.co.uk/shop/sim-cards/sim-only-deals#deviceType=phone&contractLength=P30D
