Hello

I'm helping a neighbour switch to a new phone. She's on O2 payg and wishes to keep her number.

Her old phone has a micro-sim. The new one needs a nano.

I had an old nano sim last used in March when my wife switched from o2 payg to sky contract.

Having googled the situation I put the old nano in the new phone and initiated a sim swap (from memory just input the phone number and the serial number of the 'old' no-longer-used nano.

over 48 hours later the new phone can't make or receive calls the old one can. Everything else works. Both phones can access email and internet.

(1) Will this every work or do we need to order a new sim?

She's on talkalot which is expensive at 35p/min

(2) If we need to order a new sim, are we restricted to the deals currently on the website.

Calls-and-texts is confusing me it says both £5 and £10 mininum topup and unlimited calls and texts.
Does it mean minimum top up is £10 which gives 30days unlimited after which it's 35p/min
or can you top up £5 but not get the unlimited and so be stuck at 35p/min.

She is over 70 and at the moment uses the phone in emergency situation only (eg. car wouldn't start).
However like the 2 of us she's starting to use it more and more and both of us are now on contracts.

Thanks

Hi @JCH48

Info on keeping her number here..

https://www.o2.co.uk/help/phones-sims-and-devices/how-to-keep-your-mobile-number

However, O2 no longer do a Classic PAYG tariff when you top up as and when needed. They only do Big Bundles which would require a top up monthly.

You would be able to get an O2 Classic PAYG sim from Tesco or Giffgaff though.

If the phone you want to use is unlocked, then you should be able to put the new sim in it and get it working

Thanks.

Shame all tesco payg sims are out-of-stock.

Is this how there current payg works -

minimum initial top up is £10
after that can top up with £5

for 30 days after top up you have unlimited calls and texts
after those 30 days calls will reduce your balance by 35p/min etc

or does that £5 expire after the 30 days leaving you with zero balance?

@JCH48

Did you look at the Triple Credit Classic PAYG sim?

It doesn't show as out of stock. (Tesco run on the O2 network)

https://www.tescomobile.com/pay-as-you-go-sims

You can also get the O2 Classic PAYG sim from Amazon

Also as I said earlier, try giffgaff

I rang them and they told me the 3 month old SIM I had was never going to work, maybe because I'd ported the number from it (they didn't give a reason). So we had to order a new Sim and it just took longer. I'd been trying to avoid the delay of having something posted to us. We called the helpline to swap the sim, even thought it might have been possible to do it online.
Although they are similar and slightly cheaper offers around, we decided to go for the £5 bundle and switched to that using the website

Your assumption is correct.
