Hello, is it possible to delete a MyO2 account? (not to be confused with the Community account which CAN be deleted) If not, why is there no option to do so, like in most accounts?

@koala321

Accounts have to be retained for at least 6 years after they are cancelled for legal reasons.

The only way a user can delete a MyO2 is to cancel the associated contract.

I have no affiliation whatsoever with O2 or any subsidiary companies. Comments posted are entirely of my own opinion. This is not Customer Service so we are unable to help with account specific issues.

Hi @MI5 , thanks for your reply. I can't understand why? Keeping MyO2 accounts active for 6 years seems a bit bizarre, as surely it is the User at the end of the day who decides to delete them. Accounts older than 6 years old should have a delete account option if that's the case. I'm on Pay as You Go and don't have contracts. I just remove the associated number from MyO2, and it still stays open, because I can't delete it, leaving it open to hackers.

Most accounts have a delete account option. Why 02 have to be different I don't know.

It's a legal requirement that user data is kept for that time, after the account is closed, not on a rolling 6 year basis.

Hi @MI5 , I notice you say 'after the account is closed', but I can't close (delete)the account as there is no option!

@MI5 I've seen your previous advice, not to log in to a My02 account and it will close down, so will just have to do that. You said in your previous advice 6 months? Or should I wait for 6 years! 😀😂

You are confusing 2 different things mate.

If you don't use your O2 PAYG sim for 6 months, it will be disconnected from the network, so effectively closed or cancelled. This will remove your access to your MyO2 and obviously your O2 sim will stop working.

O2 will retain the data associated with that account for 6 years - that is the legal bit.

Likelihood is that the data will hang around for longer though, so you are then within your rights to ask O2 to delete everything associated with that account, but not before.

@MI5 I'm not confusing things - I'm not talking about SIMs. I mean the 6 months you leave the account for without logging in - the My02 account, which you log in on the website to check your numbers and tariffs etc. You said to someone else a while back who was asking the same question not to log in after 6 months and the account will close itself, so I will have to do that, as there is no account deletion option. You said there isn't one as O2 need to keep the data for 6 years. MyO2 should still remain open if I did cancel a SIM as it has other numbers on there, until I remove them. (but that doesn't close the account)
