Sony Xperia U ICS update

Anonymous
Not applicable

I loaded the official O2 Android ICS update, and now my phone is misbehaving. I won't hold a stable connection with my home Wi-Fi, although it's fine with the WiFi at work, and it won't sync with MS Exchange. Not happy. Would go back to the old version, but can't. Worked just fine with the old firmware.

Phone under warranty as only a few weeks old. Thinking of taking it back.

Anybody else had problems.

Oh and I went onto the O2 shop and they won't replace it because I've had it more than 28 days (I've had it 35 days). It has to go back for "repair". They won't replace unless it's failed four (YES FOUR) attempts at repair.

I'm pretty annoyed at that. I've been a customer since they were Cellnet, and I'm also responsible for buying all the mobiles for my employer (more than 30 handsets) and we're with O2. I'm thinking that if this is they're idea of customer service, I might be taking all that business elsewhere.

A lot of the reported problems after installing ICS can be cured by running either PCCompanion or SonyUpdate as a "repair".   This will reset the phone and you will lose any data and apps - so back-up anything you want to keep first.

The problem appears to be caused by the "update" installation not replacing or removing all of the Gingerbread files - causing conflicts and instability when ICS tries to use them.   Reinstalling ICS as a "repair" causes it to completely replace all system files and avoids that problem.

What version of Android ICS is O2 offering?

Unless it's ICS version 4.0.4 it will have bugs in it, Sony needed 3 attempts before they got ICS update working correctly on the Xperia handsets.

Done a afctory reset and then used the Sony software to install the software as a repair, and it still doesn't work on Category N WiFi, and I've also found that the ActiveSync with Exchange isn't working.

Get in touch / deal with Sony directly yourself for any warranty repairs during the handsets 24 month warranty period.

DON'T let O2 have your phone / send it away for repair, you will regret it if you do.

It's not an over the air update. You have to connect it to a PC running the Sony PC Companion Software.

I wouldn't recommend taking the update.
