I've recently cancelled my current o2 contract, as I now have a new o2 sim as part of my broadband deal with Virgin. I'd like to use my old number with my new sim - how do I do that? I no longer have the old sim or device

If you no longer have the old sim there could be a problem @MattC2
You should have done a sim swap before you got rid of it (If you were with O2 previously)
Your best bet is to contact O2 and ask if they can migrate your old number to your new account.
If you call O2 on 202 or 0344 809 0202 or use O2's social media to help by messaging them on Facebook (https://o2uk.co/O2CFB) , Twitter ( https://o2uk.co/O2CTW) or Instagram (https://o2uk.co/O2CIG) , they should be able to help you, hopefully.

OK cool, thanks. Yeah I dropped my phone in the sea the day after I cancelled, so didn't get a chance to swap!

You couldn't have done a sim swap anyway as you had a new contract.
