Message not sent. Phone number formatted incorrectly

I recently switched from EE to O2, but decided to keep my old number using a PAC code. At the same time I have also changed from an iPhone to a Pixel.

O2 have successfully transferred my number which works great when messaging other android devices. However, if I try to message any of my contacts that have an iPhone I receive the error "Message not sent. Phone number formatted incorrectly". I believe this has something to do with iMessage as my number was previously connected to it. I have since removed it from iMessage but the error persists.

Seen this happen on SMS short codes, eg for INFO or BALANCE or Priority rewards: delete the number from your phone address book, key it in anew, @Crate8627.

Did you deregister your number too?

Deregister iMessage on your iPhone or online – Apple Support (UK)

Check what number is showing in your message settings under RCS or advanced features.

You might also benefit from trying a different messaging app from Play store.

The number is correct under the settings, I might just have to ask O2 for a new number

I'd try a different app first before going to the hassle of a number change.

Alternatively, you could try turning off RCS.

I have already tried this but it didn't work. I just did some tests and found that I can message my contacts who use iPhones if they message me first. The bubble on their phones goes from blue to green and this allows me to message them back.

If my suggestion didn't work, have you made any progress on the suggestion made by @MI5 to try a different messaging app from the Play store ?

This has been going on for years all the way back to Android 8 and 9, and has nothing to do with RCS, its more to do with how the contacts are picked up by the phone..

Have a look at https://contacts.google.com and see if you can edit the numbers (even if it is just delete one number) and then let it sync back up to the phone..

or go into your contacts on the phone, and edit the number.
