I keep getting messages from O2 telling me my somewhat old phone won't work on 4g and I need to upgrade when 3g is switched off. I am puzzled as I originally bought the phone because it was 4g compatible and my phone status screen says I am already using 4g. Any ideas why, and do I really have to change my phone?

The results for 4G calling (VoLTE) seem patchy for that phone. So even if O2 eventually allow 4G calling on PAYG there is no guarantee it will work
For now it will be OK for data and calls should work over 2G

@chrispevans It would help if you said what make and model phone you have.
If you're already getting a 4G signal then then it's just a stock message not applicable to you.

As I mentioned it is a bit of a vintage PAYG Wiley Fox Swift 2 kept in the car and used as a back-up/emergency.

There is no 4G or wifi calling on PAYG
If the phone can drop down to 2G when calling it will be fine
However they will be switching off 2G soon
Then you will need to get a replacement phone or switch supplier to one who allows 4G calling on PAYG such as giffgaff
