So I cancelled my o2 contract and thought I would look around for a decent sim deal. Ironically the best sim deal I could find was also with o2 via comparethemarket.com. When going through the process it asked me if I needed a new nano sim which I said no to.

My question is , exactly how will my plan start on my phone with my existing old sim ?

It won't as you have cancelled your current contract and so the sim will be switched off.

You'll need to contact O2 for a new sim to go with the new contract and also to ask them to migrate your number Guide: Migration & porting into O2
