I may need to make phone calls or send text messages while I am in Spain to somebody who has a mobile registered in Canada and who will be in Spain at the same time as me. Will I be charged?

Yes. As it will be seen as a Canadian number.

Only UK and EU numbers are not charged

This is not O2 and we are all customers here similar to yourself and cannot answer account type queries.

@PF63 If you and your Canadian friend download WhatsApp you can call, text, and video call over a WiFi connection for free while you're both in Spain or anywhere else in the world.
