I have a monthly contract with O2 which is great, I have a second phone that I would like to keep as a backup in case my main phone/sim goes down for whatever reason so thought as it will get little to no use that I'd get a pay as you go card for it, put a tenner on it and it's there if needed. Looking at the new pay as you go sim deals it appears they are not PAYG but are in effect pay monthly, I found an O2 add that was for a "Classic PAYG" card but it said current users can not switch across to it, well I don't want to switch across to it; I want it in addition to my monthly contract sim. Anyone know if this is possible or know of a better way of doing it?

Classic PAYG was withdrawn for new connections some time ago.
If you want a PAYG for back up then one running on one of the other networks would be a better bet, in case O2 goes down.
However, old style PAYG choices are now very limited
