How have I got 2 sim cards with the same number?

I have a strange issue, I had an O2 contract on a family plan in my wifes name initially, when the contract expired I purchased a sim only deal and after a bit of a problem, managed to eventually get my phone number transferred to the new sim card. I don't understand what the compliations were, but this took nearly 2 months.

The oddity is that my old sim card is still active and still has the same number. so if someone calls me, my new phone with the new sim only sim rings, but I can call someone from my old phone which has the old sim and it calls from the same number.

To make tihngs even more confusing, my wife was going to move to a new sim only deal with O2 but when she tried to do that, she was told her phone number is associated with another account. Probably me given the hassle we went through with the family plan and transferring my nubmer out of it. But also, she is getting SMS messages to say my bill is ready. I'm not being billed for the old contract fortunately, but I find the whole thing baffling.

Since I'm not being charged, I'm happy to just leave it as it is, I don't want to try to fix this and end up having my new sim cancelled or worse, losing my number which is really important for work. But is this something anyone has seen before or has any advice on? Given the issues I had just transferring my number, I don't want to go through any more problems or create any more problems.

Sounds like something your local o2 store could sort out for you.
Take photo ID with you.

I have no affiliation whatsoever with O2 or any subsidiary companies. Comments posted are entirely of my own opinion. This is not Customer Service so we are unable to help with account specific issues.
