Transfer of ownership will it really take just 24 hours or less

I have a basic / dummy Nokia phone and that’s in my name already but for other phone in my life, the number in my iPhone, it’s in mum’s name. The mobile number in the iPhone I don’t want to keep in her name forever. It makes no sense to have it in her name, I’m 30 years old now. I want to take ownership of the number then, just like the number used my basic phone, the number in the iPhone will also be in my name.

i’m going to setting up an additional connection, a connection on top of the number that’s already in my name. I’ll be doing that in store. I’ll obviously be getting a temporary number, I know this, I know it’s  part of the process. But will the transfer of ownership take less than 24 hours or less? I hope so because I don’t want to be stuck with a temporary mobile number for longer than necessary. I know mother will need to be on the line to customer services, just so she can grant permission for her account to be closed down and for the number to be moved over to the additional connection.

 Call centre agents have been telling me 24 hour is a guideline and there’s been some optimism that it could take just a few hours or even less than half an hour. The shorter amount of time it takes, the better for me.

For your information, the number used in the iPhone that’s in mother’s name, it’s out of contract, it’s just a basic 30 day rolling contract. It has been for over a year.

I have been sharing information with call centre agents that I have been noticing on this forum that transfer of ownership requests haven’t always been smooth. They have however said the systems have been upgraded so the process goes more smoothly.

I hope so - something like this should be going by without incident, without a problem.

I’m autistic so I wouldn’t be able to cope with too many  issues happening with something that in reality should be easy. I have really liked all the optimism, the level of knowledge, from call centre agents to do with transfer of ownership requests. It sounds like they really know their stuff. But when they do put in the transfer of ownership request, I just want it to go by without any problems whatsoever.

@Anonymous

Set your expectations to a minimum of 48 hours, maybe longer and it prob won't disappoint you.

No agents have said 48 hours to be honest - 24 hours has been mentioned a lot and the shorter the timeframe the better.

I have had the number in the iPhone in her name since I was a child, like before I was 16. I’m sure you agree with me @M15 that it’s better for the number to be in my name?

It makes life easier when calling up the call centres, you don’t have to pass the phone to your mother, she doesn’t have  to pass the security then as well. @MI5

I have been told that when the transfer of ownership request is initiated, the old SIM card (a Virgin Mobile branded SIM) will stop working quite fast. This is true is it?@MI5

I know after the request has been put in, the new SIM card from the store should go in the handset then and it’s just a case of a watching the SIM card to see that the number has been fully swapped over. This correct as well?
