As the post count has dropped, I thought I'd drop this in here today.

I have a Sim Only contract. I also pay for a sim only for my grandson. When I took out his, I asked if he could have control of his My O2. As he was at ours, they had a word with him and it was agreed. So basically the sim only is in my name, with my bank details but he accesses his own  My O2. (His email and password)

This weekend he's in Belgium on a stag weekend!!

I had an email from him with 2 attachments.

The first attachment was a contract for an iPhone 16, complete with airtime. Total 41.36p a month.

2nd link was letting him know they were doing a credit check.

I knew this was fraud as I wouldn't touch an iphone. 😂

Luckily they then sent him a text with a number to call re a couple of credit queries

I knew this was O2 credit check number.

So I rang. 5 minute wait and it was answered.

I explained the situation. The guy checked and said there was no order for an iphone on my account.

I said you are  looking on the wrong account, Check this number (Grandsons)

He checked and said oh yes!!!

So I had to go through some basic security questions.

They cancelled the 'Contract' and he  said I'm sure I don't need to tell you to ask your grandson to change his password. I said it's already changed.

TBH, I did  feel a bit shaken up after this. To my knowledge, this is the first time I've had fraud attempted on my account.

So beware all....

Any ideas on how they obtained the account details Den?

None whatsoever Rich. To be honest when I saw the links the grandson sent I was pretty shocked. His password is unusual. (I don't know it)

I mean how do these scammers get hold of our details?

I just was pretty thankful that he had the commonsense to ring and email me the minute the contract dropped into his inbox.

I told fraud I knew when phones are dropped off, it's usually followed up with a knock on the door claiming the wrong one had been delivered. I'd told my husband and son if a phone arrived here, they weren't to give it back under any circumstance!

Worrying that they got into the account and ordered a phone with passing any security checks or receiving the OTP's isn't it......

Well spotted by you and your grandson, @Cleoriff. Hopefully this one has been quashed and stopped in its tracks. Must happen countless times every day to people who aren't savvy and get caught out. It's a plague with no cure for it yet, nor does there seem to be one in sight.

In fairness I do have to thank my grandson for this. He regularly checks his My O2 and to see this pretty much after he landed in Belgium was a shock to him. Then he held up the 'stag do celebrations' whilst he contacted me and sent me all 3 links.

He said he thought it was weird as we just don't go for iPhones.

Thank goodness they sent the last link with the phone number on. (and that I knew it was the security check number).

I know the guy said he'd cancelled it but I really hope that's the end of it.

A real shock!!

Might just tag @Dave-O2 so he can have a read of it.
