How do I change from a pay as you go tariff to to a new phone with O2 keeping my number. What is the process?

For example,

1. Get new phone 

2. set up new phone 

3 transfer number to new phone

or 

1. Transfer current phone to monthly plan

2 Get upgrade phone

3. Transfer number

I am asking here because the AI does not understand what I am asking and jumps to selling rather than explaining what to do.

You just take out a contract on a new phone

Then you ask O2 to migrate your PAYG number to the new contract
