O2 don't allow free calls to isle of man, jersey or guernsey numbers, this has been the case since 4 Dec 2013. If you call those numbers on a regular basis, your bills are going to be very high (35p a min if I recall correctly).
I don't think Carphone Warehosue have given you particularly good advice.

Hi
I work in Jersey a lot and for the last 5 years my son kept in touch using his 02 bundled minutes and text at no extra charge.
He has just been hit with a large bill for December. When queried in store at 02 he was told he 'should have been sent a letter and text' but we could find no record of this. We were also told that all people with a 02 contract who phoned jersey landlines and mobiles were notified but I know another person who was not notified.
We both have I-phones so we are now going to keep in touch by using face time at home on broadband or from wifi hotspots which I was assured should still work free.
This was a good way for 02 to shoot themselves in the foot as we may now move our families contracts to another supplier or severely reduce the contract and use face time or skype. I believe I could also use tu go if I connect my 02 phone to free wifi but will probably use my jersey phone contract as this has unlimited broadband so will definitely not incur extra charges.
i think People in Guernsey and the Isle of Man are in the same position as Jersey.

Whether they should have kept the service to the off-shore islands going is debatable, but O2 should have made sure that all those concerned were informed.
If you weren't ask for a refund of the costs you have incurred.
