Why are O2 telling me my call is important, but they won't answer the phone!!!

I've been ringing O2 on-and-off for around a week now.  I've been WANTING TO PAY FOR AN EARLY UPGRADE (GIVE THEM MONEY).  I've called on various days, at various times of day, but just get the excuse that 'We are experiencing heavier than usual call volumes.'  As it's happening continuously, I just don't believe it.  If calls are 'heavy' all the time, then their actually 'normal.'

After a total on around three and a half hours on hold, I eventually got through to a human.  By now I'd given up wanting to extend my contract with O2, I just wanted to leave them.  I was told I'd have to pay for the remainder of the contract in full, if I wanted to leave now.  I suppose I should have expected this, but it certainly hasn't made me happy.  I complained to the operator about the delays and he said, 'It's because we have so many customers.'  I replied that if you treat them like this, you won't have them for long.  SUCCESS IS NO EXCUSE FOR SHODDY SERVICE.  I'm telling everyone I know about this, hoping that they can avoid hours of listening to inane music when they have any kind of issue.

By the way, I did resort to the Chat service to get my upgrade.  O2 base this service in India.  The told me I have the wrong name!

Shame on you, O2.  As soon as my contract's up...  Whoosh!  I'm off!

Could you upgrade through MyO2?

The lines will be busier as 4G has just been launched.
