Warning - Data Update Charges

Anonymous
Not applicable
I'm no phone geek so I only use my phone for calls, messaging, camera & little else. Unfortunately unknown to me my phone was set up to allow the apps on the phone to be updated daily. (The Use Packet Data in network settings was ticked). This went unnoticed by me as it made very little to my bill until September and October when it cost me £25 per month. Hope this helps some people.

Either add a modest data bundled tariff or purposely change your APN Settings to stop the connection.

Bambino, I don't think it's a pointless thread. I just thought I'd bring special attention to this issue, that way a great number of people might save some money...

This is something that should be stressed by O2 stores when people buy a PAYG phone, and it most likely is mentioned in some of the better stores. However, the problem arises when people with old PAYG tariff's upgrade their phones to Smartphones that suddenly start using data which is a surprise as the old phones were not capable of it.....
Also, of course, not everyone buys from an O2 store......

O2 manage to provide me with a warning when I get low on my payg data allowance.

So why could it not be possible that they could also give the same style of warning before £1 is deducted.

That way it would not matter where the handset is purchase from.

On the Ascend, every time you switch off wifi it asks if you want to enable mobile data and warns you that it may incur costs. It should be easy enough to write into the firmware that O2 stick on their phones but won't help the sim free models unless it was legislated for.....

The problem you encountered has been highlighted in many other threads besides this one and the one you started yesterday. Your situation is not unique. It's happened to many others, many times. If anyone is at fault, it's the phone manufacturers setting mobile data to on as the default setting. This is something that should be addressed.

Not really as it is the purpose of a Smartphone and as important to it's ability to function as the battery is.....

It's education that's the issue....

Responsibility lies with both the Network and Customer I believe.
