I currently have a pay monthly contract with a friends and family discount applied. Once my contract expires or I upgrade, do I lose this discount?

Your contract never "expires"

Even after you have completed your minimum term, the contract continues to roll on a 30 day basis. During this time, your discount will remain.

If you upgrade, you will need to apply again Guide: O2 Open & Friends and Family discounts - How to sign up

Yes you would lose it when contract expires and have to apply again when you upgrade...
