@AnonymousNot always but O2 do a lot of credit checks particularly on new contracts. It's dependent on whether you have been with them before and paid on time etc....

More info here http://service.o2.co.uk/IQ/SRVS/CGI-BIN/WEBCGI.EXE?New,KB=Companion,question=ref(user):str(Mobile),CASE=12573

Any new contracts will require a credit and identity check, so yes in your case unless you are already in contract and just changing to a simo tariff.
I have no affiliation whatsoever with O2 or any subsidiary companies. Comments posted are entirely of my own opinion. This is not Customer Service so we are unable to help with account specific issues.
Please select the post that helped you best and mark as the solution. This helps other members in resolving their issues faster. Thank you.

Unfortunately yes unless you are upgrading or changing a current contract to sim only. Any company does that for a new contract to ensure you aren't overstretching your finances. This protects the company and more importantly, yourself.
