Greetings folks,

My elderly mother is with PAYG and I'm attempting to rectify a problem for her.

I told her she had to make a chargeable call or send an SMS every so often or her SIM card could be de-registered if six months elapse without usage.

As usual, she didn't listen to me and her SIM was de-registered.

On the first day, I contacted customer services, and they attempted to get it re-registered, but it still said the SIM was unregistered.

On the second day I contacted customer services, they said they would fix the problem.  The O2PAYGO logo came back, and the phone could send SMS and make calls.  I said thanks, all sorted, but then I noticed it would not receive SMS or calls, so...

On the third day I contacted customer services and asked them if they could rectify the problem.  They said give it 48 hours, if it doesn't sort itself, contact them again and ask for a replacement SIM.  It didn't sort itself, so...

On the fourth day I contacted customer services and asked for a replacement SIM.  They said one would be sent out that is linked to the existing number in 24-48 hours.   I said thank you.  A week later, nothing had arrived, so...

On the fifth day I contacted customer services.  I told them I had not received the SIM that was sent out and asked if another could be sent.  The customer service operator told me no, another SIM cannot be sent.  They will only send another SIM out if I sign up to a contract.  I replied, no she doesn't want a contact, she only really uses it for emergencies and 2FA SMS.  She replied, can't help you then.

I'm sure you can understand I was quite exasperated at this point.

So, I decided to purchase another O2 PAYG SIM online, and start all over again.

I've just topped up the phone with a £10 voucher and I've received a text telling me:  We've taken £10 from your balance, you now have £0.00.

What the literal Christ!  What is going on!

What is even worse is my mother has about £40 balance on her old number.

Please can someone help me.

All PAYG sims are now bundles. As O2 are actively trying to get people off the old legacy tariffs, you will be lucky to get hers back, but, try on social media.
