Recently visited Madeira. Received a welcome text with some high charges i.e. £7.20 per mb and £2.00 per minute etc. We had sent some photos on whatsapp earlier that morning; so panicked at set the phone on airplane for the rest of the day expecting that we had spent a fair bit of the loaded credit.
Got home and the account was down only £4.00 or so for the whole 14 days away including Spanish ports as well.
Madeira Portugal is within the O2 Europe zone and we obviously paid those lower charges.
The question is why did we get the erroneous text message. It came in on 2 separate devices on two separate numbers? In Spanish ports the normal low charge text came in OK. Any ideas?

Most likely that your phones picked up a non EU network, maybe Moroccan ?

It might have picked up sky scanner on the ship? Moroccan, unlikely Madeira is a long way away from there. Many thanks for your reply....
