I'm going to america and wanted to check how to use my phone without incurring additional/roaming charges?

I don't plan to text or make phone calls. Just planning to use the local free WiFi to go on WhatsApp, Internet and other apps I have on my phone.

I presume if I turn off mobile data and keep it on airplane mode I should be OK?

USA - Roaming with O2 explains what a Contract Tariff customer gets.

If you are PAYG, you may find using your phone exactly as you describe will be the best: avail of local free WiFi, use WhatsApp, sync maps to your phone over WiFi if you need to use your phone for maps/travel.

Make sure you disable your O2 voicemail before you leave: Guide: All you need to know about O2 Voicemail 901

Many here say keeping airplane mode on prevents the mobile aspect of your phone and permits WiFi, although I have not tested that when in the USA, @Rach1313

The full Guide: Roaming MegaGuide is quite a read, but useful info is included therein.

Enjoy your time in the USA - and if you find you need to use your phone while away from WiFi, look for a PAYG US mobile SIM from AT&T or T-Mobile - they can be purchased from Amazon in the UK valid for a month - which starts when you activate the SIM in the USA.

@Rach1313

Put phone into airplane mode and turn on wifi.

Job done and no charges if kept in airplane mode.

Do not turn phone on and off either as that may invoke a text message being sent.

I have no affiliation whatsoever with O2 or any subsidiary companies. Comments posted are entirely of my own opinion. This is not Customer Service so we are unable to help with account specific issues.
