I have moved to Australia. I have kept my uk mob number for uk bank and other App authentication. Can I cancel my existing o2 contract but retain my uk mob number - in effect a 0 cost contract?

No the number has to be attached to an active UK SIM.

You can move it to pay as you go but there will be top up and usage conditions which ever network you choose 

This is not O2 and we are all customers here similar to yourself and cannot answer account type queries.
