Earth Hour: Will you be taking part?

Hi guys,

 Ever heard of ‘Earth Hour’? If not, you have now 

It’s an event organised by the WWF in order to highlight how we all need to band together to make sure our planet remains clean from pollution and wildlife decreases.

This year, 7000 cities in 157 different countries will be taking part and over 3000 landmarks in the UK including Big Ben, Buckingham Palace and Wembley Stadium will be turning off their power in support of the event.

Telefonica is also doing its part though, and hopes you can too!

O2 stores across the land will be turning off their power over the weekend in support and Telefonica has made a number of pledges relating to Earth Hour's objectives:

• To halve the emissions from our network by 2015, relative to data traffic.
• Develop 100% renewable energy for all sites where we control the energy bill.
• Have at least one carbon neutral site, achieved through renewable on site generation.
•  Reduce absolute carbon emissions in Telefonica offices and stores by 25%.
•  Be using 25% less water in our offices and switch sites.

If you want to take part, go ahead and turn off any electrical devices that you can on Saturday at around 8:30 PM for an hour.

I'll be trying to be part of it. I'm not sure what my plans for Saturday are yet but I wouldn't say no to a candlelit dinner without the television on

Candles every night but the TV is always on

We have swapped our old 500w security lights (4 of them) for 30w led spotlights so a saving of 1880w .

Also done the same at our local village hall.

Yes led spotlight are about 8x the cost of 500w spotlights but the payback in energy is very good and the led bulbs do not blow like the old halogen ones so saving on bulb replacement costs as well.

I've replaced all the bulbs in the house with energy saving bulbs but as you say, at a cost. I remember when they first came onto the market they were free or at a ridiculously cheap price to encourage people to use them but even as costly as they are now, it's well worth the saving you get in the long run. I've never had to replace one in the five years I've been using them.

I don't know anyone who doesn't use energy saving bulbs anymore guess there are still some out there

@Anonymous some energy saving bulbs are an environmental hazard (mercury) but led is the way forward
