This was genuine. I called 02 directly to verify and first thing they said was 02 never calls customers BUT they then checked on my account and confirmed it was legit. I told them they need to sort out their communication between departments.

The general opinion on the Community Forum here is that they use the "we'll call you back" tactic to get you off the line - and nobody from O2 works on the Forum in a CS role, but there is a part-time board manager who can be tagged if required - preference seems to be to use Twitter/X or FB or Insta Social Media channels as shared in the link just below, and be persistent.
