Wi-Fi with good security should be a good enough deterent however people using specialist network snooping tools which intercept data packets or otherwise store information such as browsing history isn't as secure as say a home network.
4G is great if you can get it and 3G is pretty good when you're getting HDSPA or HSPA+ I dare suppose. Unless you live in a well populated area not out in the sticks, you will be lucked out for a good reliable signal.
