Unlocking a second hand iphone

My son bought an iphone off eBay, he has been using it on giffgaff and now wants to move to 3, can we put a contract O2 SIM card in it and request a free unlock or would we have to go down the £15 payg route?

You can put a contract sim in the phone and get a free unlock. You will have to make a couple of calls with it though.(assuming it is locked to O2)
