My Sony Xperia XZ display rondomly turns on, any ideas? could the handset be faulty?

This might be caused by wakelocks and can be generated by apps running background activity or other processes.
You might also want to check if "double tap to wake" is enabled as this can be quite random sometimes.

I have just turned it off and will monitor is over the next 24 days. If the problem still occurs I might get an exchange as I am still withing the 14 day period.

If it is faulty you can get an exchange up to 28 days but you should run it in safe mode first to be sure it's not one of your apps causing it.
