I am working in South Africa foor a few weeks and can not connect to O2 - what network os recommended please

It says O2 have roaming partnerships with
Cell C
MTN
VodaCom

Your phone should be set to connect automatically with one of the O2 partner networks.

If your phone is unlocked you might be better off getting a local sim and using that. If you're roaming on an O2 partner network for a few weeks you will likely come back to the UK to find a fairly hefty bill.
