On moving from Virgin to O2 was given a very generous sim only pay monthly deal. This is great out and about however the O2 signal at home is poor. My current phone does not support wifi calling. If I purchase say a Samsung A16 or A25 from Argos (cheaper than from O2) will I be able to utilise wifi calling ? Or do you need to buy direct from O2 to get one with so-called O2 firmware? Thanks.

Any new Samsung phone that offers WiFi Calling will work with O2 as they no longer use their own firmware.
However, WiFi Calling is not available if yo are PAYG

Re the comment above about Wifi Calling not working with PAYG, you would just carry on with your current sim only contract. (as you say it's a good deal)
However when your current simo contract runs out, you probably wont find as good a deal again if you go directly through O2.
Think about using USwitch (like many on here) where you will get a much cheaper O2 deal
https://www.uswitch.com/mobiles/compare/sim_only_deals/o2/
Choose the deal you want
This will automatically redirect you to the O2 website
Just follow the prompts and choose the UPGRADE option
Complete the deal and nothing on your account changes except the tariff at the new cheaper cost
Payment date is the same and your next bill will be at the cheaper rate and will be made up of the pro rata cost of your old tariff and your new tariff
The change should show in My O2 within 24 hours
Volt benefits will still apply as will possibly a 3 month extra such as Disney+
