Galaxy S2 won't connect to 5ghz

Hi there, i have a major issue with my Galaxy S2.
It can see the 5ghz but it simply won't connect to any 5ghz networks anywhere at all. Ever.
This has been a problem for several months now and although i can connect fine to the 2.4 ghz i like the non crowded and better signal that the 5ghz provides.
I also live in an area surrounded by students and can count 24wifi signals within 50 meters of my building.

Things i have done to attempt to manually fix.
Restarted phone (many many times)
Wiped phone to factory settings (8 times)
Downgraded to previous OS (3 times)
Tested 8 different 5ghz networks all the same.
Preyed and cried (2 times)
The only error i get is that it could not authenticate the passwords etc.
I could hand the phone in for a repair but as it was never that important i didn't bother.

Any ideas?

I use a Belkin Playmax, set up access control, 2.4 worked but 5ghz still gave me the error. It is possible that the 5ghz side of the chip if fubbed?

Wowza.  In that case, with all optionx exhasted - gotta be looking at a hardware fault.

 

Could also be the radio - that could be sorted by flashing another radio however you are going down the route of custom roms etc then...

Try changing the channel for the 5Ghz part - maybe doesn't support the current channel - I'm sure I remember similar issues a while ago.

 

I'll also dig deeper for you and come back.

 

 

*edit* have you also checked you have the location set to europe on the router for 5Ghz?

Thanks for quick reply though I should have added that I have tried this, channel by channel, then even had a test router that use channels that are not supposed to be available in this country just to see but still nothing.

What software/rom are you using?

 

Have you tried changing in the advanced wifi settings from Auto to 5Ghz only?

currently the latest software which seems to have disabled the choice to choose between 5ghz and 2.4. I can still see the 5ghz networks but just can't get past the authentication part even though I know I am using the correct passcode

Is it complaining about authentication specifically or just saying cannot connect?

 

Try changing the security (can you do it only for your 5GHz part on your router?) to something else, AEP, TKP etc..

If I put in the passcode the it hangs for a second then just says saved and secured, then it vanishes and does a rescan, once this happens and the 5ghz show up it shows as "Authentication error occurred"

tried the changing of security and even left it open but even open it wouldn't connect to it

Seems a common issue also with S3's

 

Try setting the same/different passwords for each band.

 

Also try forgetting the network each time you change something.

 

Finally something else I just found to try:

 

Hey Guys,
Usually "authentication error" error messages refer to a type of second level of security in addition to the pass phrase you've assigned to your wireless router especially if the ‘wireless access point’ is enabled. In this case your galaxy s3 will wifi connect to your computer with the pass phrase but stop short at the wireless access point to return the ‘authentication error’ message.

To fix this, you will need to enter the MAC address of your galaxy s3 in the “wireless station access list”. First go to your galaxy s3 settings page and press ‘about device’, press ‘status’ and scroll half way down and take note of the Wi-Fi MAC address.

Go back to your computer and log back in to the router and navigate to the ‘Wireless Settings” page and click on the ‘Setup Access List’ button. In the ‘Add New Station Manually’ area, enter a device name, enter the Wi-FI MAC address without the semi colons and click ‘Add’. Your Galaxy s3 device is now listed in the table of ‘Trusted Wireless Stations’. Ensure that the check box for ‘Turn Access Control On’ is checked. Click ‘Apply’ and log out.

As I use a netgear router, the wireless settings pages may be slightly different but the words should be similar.

The ‘authentication error’ message should not appear again.

Yes, unfortunately it has always been an issue with the S3 and also N4.... Adding your device to the preferred or trusted list seems to fix it but obviously only if you have access to the router.
