there seems to be some hassle o2 network cover wise in the north west of northern ireland, any reason why???

In NYC the main networks are T-Mobile or AT&T so try and select either of those...

If you're in NY and roaming using the O2 network the affiliate is AT&T. I use T-Mobile when I'm in the US, but it's with a T-Mobile sim in an unlocked phone. Roaming with an O2 sim using a US network is very expensive. You will come back to the UK and face a very hefty bill, which is why I use T-Mobile over there. If I need to call the UK I use Skype over WiFi.
