When your contract expires it will automatically become a one month rolling contract. You need to give O2 30 days notice that you want to cancel you contract and also ask for your PAC if you want to keep your number, which you can ask for now. That should work out exactly right for you. Call Customer Services on 202 from your mobile to do this. You can give the PAC to your new network provider. Once that is put into motion it will effectively cancel your contract. Don't cancel your direct debit until you receive a final bill and it clears.
