4-months old iPhone 4S & 2-year long contract - can I change phones?

Anonymous

Hi,

I've signed a 2-year long contract for an iPhone 4S. Actually did it via Tesco Mobile website (the difference was the phone was free whereas O2 was charging around £50 for it...), but that shouldn't change anything I guess...?

After the latest upgrade to iOS6 I'm not happy with my phone anymore and I'm thinking about changing it. I haven't decided I definitely want to do it, it's just a thought and I'd like someone to let me know, please, what are the options. I still hope Apple will fix most of the issues that have arisen since the iOS6 was released, though Galaxy 3 sound really attractive to me now.

So, how much would that be to cancel the contract or is it possible to give my iPhone 4S back to O2 and ask for Galaxy instead (possibly signing another 2-year long contract)? Another question - is it legal/possible to sell my iPhone and continue paying for the contract and get just a handset (G3) using my current sim? (I think there are some adapters making iPhone sims compatible with the rest of the phones...)

Thanks very much indeed for your help!

Peter

You won't be able to swap the phone or take out a new contract without paying off your present contract in full.

Best bet would be to sell the phone (it's yours) and buy the S3 if that's what you want.

Your microsim should fit straight into the S3 and you can just carry on the contract. If you have an iphone data bolt on then swap it for an ordinary data bolt on.

Hi Jonsie and thanks for your lightning-fast response. I think it answers all my questions slight_smile

Another one that I have just thought about - what's the chance to "test-drive" a mobile phone? Just use if for couple of hours and decide if it's the one I'd like to use for another 2 years? That's what I did before I got the 4S, although it was dead easy, as my girlfriend had a 3GS and I could wear it for 2 months before signing for the 4S. I loved it. I really used to...

Is there something similar to a car-rental, hiring mobile phones on a pay-per-day basis?

Not from O2, nor I would imagine anyone else, as they're second hand once used.

I don't know of anywhere that does that I'm afraid. You pay your money and take your choice, there is always the 7 day return option.

My friend suggested a mobile phone shop... O2, Vodafone, Carphone Warehouse, P4U - any of these apparently would be happy to show me a real phone (not a plastic dummy) and let me play with it as much as I want. I'd probably just buy it if it wasn't this expensive 😕
