Hi Freeman-uk and Welcome to the Forum.

You can have the 18+ bar lifted if you require.

The bar can be lifted by any O2 High Street Store for no £1 charge at all. (Take Photo I.D)

The reasons behind the £1 charge if the bar is lifted online and how they give you it back are explained in my link.

The £1 is refunded anyway.
It's about confirming that you have a credit card and are therefore over 18.
It is also an Ofcom requirement for all networks.

Yeah but it's always awkward when I ask for the **bleep** filter to be lifted.
Pay the pound, save the shame bro

They don't actually take the £1, it's simple simply an authorisation to check the card is valid.

Are you guys sure about the £1 ?

"How to prove your age
To prove your age on your phone you’ll need to have a credit card handy. We’ll charge you £1, which we’ll give back to you either through your bill or calling credit, this is so the cardholder will see it on their statement – so if someone borrows their card without permission, they’ll know about it."

I've done one on live chat and one on PAYG.
On PAYG the £1 was added to my credit. Live chat didn't charge me wink
