when you upgrade, do you have to pay for the new phone or is it free like the one originally with the contract?

No phones are free, they are priced into the overall contract pricing. Some phones still require an upfront payment though (usually the brand new phones) and some you can get without an upfront payment.
It does all depend on which phone you want to get and how you take your contract.

It depends on the deal you take.

In many cases the handset is free however it is effectively bundled up in the package price. To improve clarity o2 now offer the refresh packages which separate out the value of the handset from the calls texts and data package.

I would call o2 retentions on 202 after you identify the handset you want and see what they offer.

Hi
If it's an early upgrade, you will have to pay remaining months before you could get a new phone.
When are you due for an upgrade?
