I have monthly plan with 15GB data allowence. My average data usage is 5.67Gb a month. I am midway through my monthly plan and one day thsi week I noticed I had approx 13.25GB left.. The following day I received a message from O2 stateting I had used 80% of my data. I checked and I had 2.81Gb left.  I could not see any specific reason for this and rarely stream etc. I immediately turned off data raoming and put my phone in Low Data Mode.

I had to go out next day and needed at one point to turn on Data Roaming to use an app in a store. As i tried to use the app i lost the 2.81Gb left in minutes maybe seconds. Any ideas.  I am now down to zero with 14 days left before renewal.

I can use wifi fine with no issues. When i looked at what apps have been using data i can see no issues. Concerned that the same will happen next month.

What has changed, @MA217?

If you are in the UK with an O2 contract, data roaming being on or off should make no difference, unless you live close to the Irish border in Northern Ireland (Counties Down, Armagh, Tyrone, Fermanagh or Derry).

Have you installed a new app or has your phone's Auto-Update (for apps in the Phone App store, and for System updates) setting been changed away from "On WiFi Only"?

Meantime, you can check in your settings which app(s) consume most data, tip for both iPhone and Android below:

How to find out how much data you've used on an iPhone

  1.  Go to the Settings app and select Mobile Data.
  2. This menu will show you data you've used in the current period, which will be from when you first started using the phone.
  3. It will also show how much data you've used while roaming, which is useful when you're abroad.
  4. You can also see how much time you've spent on the phone since you got your handset.
  5. At the bottom of the menu is a list of all the apps installed on the phone and you can select the ones you don't want to use data. Underneath each app it will also say how many megabytes of data it has used so far this cycle.
  6. If you want to monitor your data month by month, then you'll need to remember to reset. Select Reset Statistics at the bottom of the page to set your data back to zero.

How to find out how much data you've used on Android

  1.  Go to the Settings app on your phone and scroll down until you see a menu called Data Usage or Data.
  2. In the Data menu it will show you how much data you've used since a certain date. You should make sure the start date or billing cycle for your contract is correct so it refreshes at the right time.
  3. If there's a suitable option, make sure your billing cycle is set to monthly and you can then see how much data you're using each month.
  4. You can also set a data warning, so if you're getting close to your cap your phone will alert you and, in some cases, switch your data off until you override it.
  5. You may see a Data Saver option in the menu, too. Activating it will stop some apps from using your data while you aren't using them. You can also choose which apps have unrestricted access, so you'll still get emails and notifications when you're using other apps or your phone is asleep.
  6. Selecting Mobile Data Usage within the menu will show you how much of your data each installed app is using. You may be surprised at how hungry, or not, some apps are.

Thank you for the reply. No new apps but I do have auto updates on. I biggest user of data on my iPhone shows as Norton 360. I have since reset the usage statistics but won’t know for sure until my data resets on 16/4.  I did by an extra 100mb and that went in seconds to Norton 97mb.  I have also noticed that ‘push notifications’ going up in Mb’s without any notifications. I will check usage again when my monthly allowance comes into affect on 16th April. Until then Wi-Fi only. O2 did confirm that in two days I used over 11Gb but obviously cannot tell me why.

Norton 360's Internet Security feature is enabled, it monitors all internet traffic, which can cause iOS to incorrectly attribute high data usage to the Norton 360 app, even though the actual data usage by the app is far less. Norton 360 monitors all internet traffic on the device, including traffic from other apps. Because of this, iOS attributes the total data usage of all apps to the Norton 360 app.

@MA217 - You can ignore the high data usage displayed for Norton 360 in the iOS data usage statistics, as it doesn't reflect the actual data usage by the app. Focus on the 2nd-highest app and next closest, or perhaps a lot of little transfers by different apps adding to a bigger total.  WiFi Assist can often be at fault if your WiFi signal is weak where the phone rests for extended periods, say in the charging dock overnight.
