Does o2 even care about the loyalty of their customers?

So,

I've been with o2 for a good 12 years, with various makes and models of handset.
For much of the time I have spent around £45-£50 p/m on my contract.

With the newer generation of handsets, the 4G capabilities and an ever growing amount of data required "on the go", I am finding it deeply disappointing that despite a £48 p/m 2 year contract, I am afforded just 1GB of data!
Friends and family members on various other networks are paying less for the same unlimited calls and texts but they also have no data limits...
12 years and I can't watch a film while out of wifi yet my brother who has been with his provider for 3 years, my ex who has been with hers for 5 years and my father who has been with his for almost 2 years all pay less for far more.

I find this unacceptable, surely I'm not the only one who thinks this is ridiculous?

No networks offer truly unlimited data anymore, so those others you mention will still be restricted.
O2 offer contracts with up to 30gb of data included which should be more than enough for anyone, so it does sound like you need to change your tariff to one which is more suitable to your current needs.
I have no affiliation whatsoever with O2 or any subsidiary companies. Comments posted are entirely of my own opinion. This is not Customer Service so we are unable to help with account specific issues.

@Anonymous I agree with @MI5. I pay roughly the same as you pm and have unlimited calls/texts and 16 gb of data. And I have one of the latest phones - the Galaxy S8+.

I chose my particular tariff as I play and download lots of games as well as streaming films and TV shows. And I have no complaints.

Lover of all things Samsung. Currently using Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus 128gb

The situation is strange but not ridiculous.
When choosing a contract/tariff/deal, everyone chooses one that most suits their needs.
It does not matter how much you pay, so long as a)you can afford it and b)you get what you want.
If the tariff you are on is not suitable, or not competitive, then you are well within your right to choose another provider - be that mobile network (ie, EE/BT, 3, etc) or source of contract (ie, Carphone Warehouse, etc).
