iPhone 5 Data Usage

Anonymous
Not applicable

I usually use about 600MB of my 1GB allowance every month, therefore on average about 20MB a day. My new month began on Friday but I didn't leave the house all day and was using my home wifi. I went out yesterday and used my phone as normal and not excessively. Getting home, I checked my usage and I've already used 120MB of my 1GB allowance in just two days.

I was wondering if there's a known issue with data usage at the minute. I used a little bit more data than normal in the first few days of having the phone back in December but it soon sorted itself out. I haven't changed any of my settings. Most notifications (Email, Facebook etc.) are switched off, my location settings are switched off and I've opted out of sending diagnostics to o2.

That's a bit annoying. I'll just have to keep my eye on it.

Although, my concern was that if I went over my data usage for the month, I'd incur extra charges. Speaking to an o2 Guru, they tell me that this isn't the case.

'Don't worry, even if you go over the data for the month there'll be no extra charge for the usage.' and 'No be assured that you'll not be charged, as per our policy we don't charge our customer's for the extra usage.'

Can I clarify this with anyone here?

Use the search function and you will find many threads. It appears to be an iOS issue. Apparently it's all over the Apple forums too so not restricted to O2.
I have no affiliation whatsoever with O2 or any subsidiary companies. Comments posted are entirely of my own opinion. This is not Customer Service so we are unable to help with account specific issues.

Cheers. Is this a recent issue? I just find it odd as it's only affected me for the last couple of days.

I'm on iPhone 5.

I was aware of this but it caused me no problems before with my data usage. Since I've noticed that my phone has used 120MB in one day, I've switched my data off while at home.

Having just had a look through my phone, I decided to have a look at Onavo Count which tells you where your Cellular Data has been used over the last 5 days. According to Onavo Count, 100MB has been used in App Downloads from 12-17 of March.

I updated about 7 or 8 apps yesterday morning but I was at home and on wifi. However, if my phone went to sleep whilst still updating these apps, is it feasible that it was using 3G rather than wifi when applying said updates? I hope this is the cause of this high usage and I don't have to worry about going over my allowance this month.

Thanks for the help so far though!

I use two jail break tweaks to keep mine on wifi. Although I submit jail breaking is not for everyone.

You could turn off mobile data and 3G while your at home.

You will however take a bigger hit in your battery.

At night I use airplane mode.
