Used All Data Allowance in 2 Mins

Connected my iphone to laptop yesterday evening and some how laptop had decided to use iphone as internet connection rather than WIFI - so now data allowance is used up... This has never happened before!

Is it an IOS7 bug, do i now always have to make sure personal hotspot is turned off before connecting iphone to laptop?

Anyone else been stung?

If you have previously used your iPhone as a hotspot for this laptop then it's likely to have remembered the settings and could easily join it automatically. As someone else said you should always switch off personal hotspot when you are finished with it.

The problem is that the other device doesn't know this is a moble connection, it just sees a wifi hotspot, so normal background activity can eat your data in no time. I fell foul of this when travelling, I had my iPad linked to my iPhone, and the iPad ate my roaming data package in two minutes flat downloading photo stream pictures, which it wouldn't normally do on a 3G connection.

Recheck your setting - if your laptop was using the iPhone as a hotspot , the laptop and iPhone would have to be paired, and the connection live for that to happen.

Hi,

Usually for them to pair you have to confirm / accept this via the phone.

If your on a contract then you will not be charged for going over your data allowance but you will have throttled speeds.

However you can if you wish purchase a Data Bolt on to carry on using the internet as the usual speeds.
