Sounds like you are accidentally putting the call on hold and releasing it.
Do you have a proximity sensor on your phone and does it work ok @Majortom ?
What phone have you got?

Hi gmarkj.
Thanks for the reply.
My phone is an Alcatel 5028y. i do not know of a proximity sensor on the phone.
The person that I am talking to when I get the message states that they hear the sound of a keypad being used, like someone dialling a number. You may be right, maybe I am accidentally dialling a number when I put the phone to my ear. I will try my phone on speaker and see if that solves the problem.
Thanks again

So the proximity sensor turns the screen off when you are on a call so that you don't press buttons by accident with your face.
Fingers crossed the speaker option fixes it @Majortom
