Galaxy S3 post-JB update chaging issues

Anonymous
Not applicable

Sorry if this has been covered elsewhere, but I have looked through previous threads and am unable to find what I need to know. Now, the problem...

My S3 has been updated to Jellybean via OTA from Samsung, so I am assuming it is a factory unlocked unit as it wasn't from O2. Since the update, I have had issues charging the phone which weren't present before the update. Using the AC charger yields a charge rate of <2% per hour and charging via USB yields a rate of roughly 8-10% p/h. If I use the phone while it is chargning, the battery life actually drops.

I have been in touch with Samsung, who told me to remove the battery for at least 40 mins before reinserting it and discharging the phone completely. Then charge the phone to 100% while turned off before performing a factory reset. After my doing this, they think the battery is at fault and are going to send me a new one, however, I think this is software related as it seems odd how it's only since the update that the issue has surfaced.

Battery life is between 2 and 4 days with 2 e-mail accounts syncing every hour, WiFi and mobile data constantly enabled and variable internet usage daily - so no problems in the battery life department. slight_smile

I hope someone can shed some light on the issue at hand, and my thanks in advance for any help given.

So my phone now seems to have sorted itself out and now charges to 100% within a couple of hours every time. The battery has finally arrived (after about 2 weeks) but remains unused due to everything working again.

Must have been its 'time of the month'. Smiley Very Happy

Thanks for the input guys, and if I experience any other quirky issues then I shall return to this forum once more. I shall mark as solved.

(Still getting 2-3 days out of the battery, not that I'm trying to induce jealousy at all...)

I'm not sure if its a typo or not but you stated you get 2-4 days battery?? I get 24 hours if i'm lucky!

If you are getting 2-4 days I would not mess about with it and just be grateful lol. On the flip side, samsung are right in saying that you should recalibrate your battery after the update. To do this, discharge the battery fully. Now charge the phone to 100% with the phone turned off. Unplug the charger and then re-insert. Again, allow it to go to 100%

If you have already done a factory reset, there shouldn't be any preference problems anymore.

You have nothing to worry about wink

I also am having the exact same issue. Sometimes when I put the phone on charge as I go to bed (Usually down to 25-30% with my daily usage) When I wake up in the morning and check my emails the phone has only charged to around 60%.

I usually get to work and charge it on my PC via USB and takes literally between 1 and 2 hours to do this.

It's very strange as the problem is intermittent. Only happened twice to me now.

That's no typo - as I type this I am on 2 days and 10 hours with 33% remaining. It's just that the charge time is ludicrous ever since the update. Before the update I got the same battery life but a complete charge would be done in under 5 hours.

I did the recalibration of the battery and the issue persists. It's no problem at home, but if I'm away and need to charge, then I would NEED to use a USB port on a PC as the AC adaptor is now effectively useless.

Are there no known software bugs pertaining to the acceptance of charge from different source types?

I've not heard of this issue before... Mostly people are complaining about poorer battery life since the JB update which Samsung have said they will push out a patch for early December..... It may help with your issue too, but no guarantees..... Have you received the new battery yet?

I did mention something similar a while back when i installed jb. my phone would no longer charge using my in car charger. I just put it down to a fault charger and bought a new one though. is your charger the official one that came with the phone (pretty sure its 1a)

I would be interested to find out what you have turned on/off to achieve two days battery life, i would love to see what it could do to mine!

Just an after thought, are you using a high capacity battery or the standard (2100mah)

The most peculiar thing happened last night: I took my charger to work with me and popped it on at our midnight break. Upon going for 'lunch' at 3am, it was fully charged! I'm now wondering whether plugging into an extension lead would have any effect, but it still seems odd as it is only post-update.

As for my charger, it is Samsung's own and battery is stock. Most of my options are left as is aside from disabling GPS. The only motion control I have active is the 'raise to ear to call' one. I seem to be somewhat lucky with regards to battery life as my last phone (HTC Desire) lasted a solid 2 days until 15%. I use 15% as my recharge asap threshold! ^.^

Hi all. Just a quick mention and to bring this post back to life, last night I popped my phone on charge, at around 11pm (when I got in bed) and when I woke up this morning (7am) the phone had reached 76% charge. This is now the third time it has happened to me. Fortunately chraging at work now so it's nearlly fully charged.

Also someone mentioned that they have their charger in an extension socket? I too have mine in an extension socket so it's close to my bed side table. But can't see why that would have any difference. Especially since their is nothing else plugged into the 230v wall socket.

Strange, and confused. The problem is so intermittent I can't think of anything to try.
