On 30th January I placed an order for a 30 day Sim only contract for my youngest son.
It was a 2G deal which was reduced by 50% for the first 6 months and was due to cost £10 per month.
I filled in everything on line and linked it to my 02 account.
I also sent a request to keep my son's current phone number.
I did all this on-line as this offer was not available over the phone.
We haven't received the sim yet and I haven't had any communication with 02, but the order went through.
How do I proceed?

I did the same in January @Anonymous (via live chat) I had a text and email confirmation immediately and after midnight My O2 was updated to my new tariff. http://www.o2.co.uk/myo2
My new sim came within 48 hrs. If your order hasn't followed this pattern then, as said, give O2 a call in the morning....
