why would I upgrade from paying virgin £11-95 a month to paying you £40 a month doesn't make sense

Do you have to upgrade? If you are happy with your present tariff keep it on 

This is not O2 and we are all customers here similar to yourself and cannot answer account type queries.

It's sales trying to push you into something you may not want.

You can choose any tariff or none at all and stay as you are.
