I feel the OP would have good grounds at this time to request a credit IF o2 haven't advised in advance of these potential charges.
There is a good chance that O2 will refund charges as a goodwill gesture but I also believe that users should familiarise themselves with any changes made by software updates, no matter which OS or device they are using.
