Does a UK iphone 5 (on O2) work as a sat nav in USA

Hi - I'm off th Florida soon and just wanted to double check that I can use my iPhone 5 as a Sat Nav in the hire car. I use apple maps in the UK for this and think it works pretty well. I have also got the Google App - which does a similar job. I'm know i'll get hit with the data roaming charges, but this is fine.

Any UK based users tried it? How heavy are the data charges?

£6 per Mb up to £40 for which you get 50Mb.

If you are using it as a sat nav, 50Mb isn't much at all. I personally wouldn't recommend it if you have any other alternative?

I would think the data charges would be fairly hefty using the Apple or Google maps. Personally I use Co-Pilot as the the maps are already preloaded into the phones memory so consequently cheaper to use. There is an initial outlay for the app but it works well.

I would get one of the paid for usa satnav apps that store the map data on the iphone.

If you have preloaded maps, you can use GPS without data. 50MB of data wouldn't get you very far. If you don't want to pay for a preloaded map package, you can usually add a GPS device to your car rental. It would probably work out cheaper than paying for data.

I DO NOT WORK FOR O2
